Editor’s note: The following excerpt on “Teepee Etiquette — The Unwritten Law of the Lodge,” was taken from <\/em>The Book of Woodcraft and Indian Lore (1912) by Ernest Thompson Seton. Seton said he gathered these maxims on American Indian hospitality “chiefly from observations of <\/span>actual practice, but in many cases from formal precept.” They’re still largely apropo<\/em> <\/em>for modern hosts entertaining visiting guests in their “teepee” (though your mother-in-law may disagree).<\/p>\n

Teepee Etiquette \u2014 The Unwritten Law of the Lodge<\/span><\/h3>\n

Be hospitable.<\/p>\n

Always assume that your guest is tired, cold, and <\/span>hungry.<\/p>\n

Always give your guest the <\/span>place of <\/span>honor in the <\/span>lodge, and <\/span>at the <\/span>feast, and <\/span>serve him in reasonable ways.<\/p>\n

Never sit while your guest stands.<\/p>\n

Go hungry rather than stint your guest.<\/p>\n

If your guest refuses certain food, say nothing; he may be under vow.<\/p>\n

Protect your guest as one of the <\/span>family; feed his horse.<\/p>\n

Do not trouble your guest with many questions about himself; he will tell you what he wishes you to know.<\/p>\n

In another man’s lodge follow his customs, not your own.<\/p>\n

Never worry your host with your troubles.<\/p>\n

Always repay calls of <\/span>courtesy; do not delay.<\/p>\n

Give your host a little present on leaving; little presents are little courtesies and <\/span>never give offense.<\/p>\n

Say “Thank you” for every gift, however small.<\/p>\n

Compliment your host, even if you strain the <\/span>facts to do so.<\/p>\n

Never walk between persons talking.<\/p>\n

Never interrupt persons talking.<\/p>\n

Let not the <\/span>young speak among those much older, unless asked.<\/p>\n

Always give place to your seniors in entering or leaving the <\/span>lodge; or anywhere.<\/p>\n

Never sit while your seniors stand.<\/p>\n

Never force your conversation on any one.<\/p>\n

Speak softly, especially before your elders, or in presence of <\/span>strangers.<\/p>\n

Never come between any one and the <\/span>fire.<\/p>\n

Do not stare at strangers; drop your eyes if they stare hard at you; and <\/span>this, above all, for women.<\/p>\n

The <\/span>women of the <\/span>lodge are the <\/span>keepers of the <\/span>fire, but the <\/span>men should help with the <\/span>heavier sticks.<\/p>\n

Always give a word or sign of <\/span>salute when meeting or passing a friend, or even a stranger, if in a lonely place.<\/p>\n

Do not talk to your mother-in-law at any time, or let her talk to you.<\/p>\n

Be kind.<\/p>\n

Show respect to all men, but grovel to none.<\/p>\n

Let silence be your motto till duty bids you speak.<\/p>\n
