Kool-aid + Pickles = Heaven. I had no idea that such a thing even existed up until I came across a video on BuzzFeeds YouTube channel. Apparently this crazy concoction originated down South in the Mississippi Delta…because reasons I guess. I’ll admit that I wasn’t originally sold on the whole idea of adding Kool-Aid and sugar to a thing I already enjoyed as is…but for once, I’m glad that my curiosity took over. The taste is kind of what you would expect but you won’t fully be able to understand it, even after you’ve tried it. Some have said that the taste ratio is 80/20 koolaid/pickle…but I would put it more in the 60/40 ballpark.
The ingredients are pretty cheap and easy to find. I found everything at the local Wal-Mart for somewhere around 7 or 8 bucks. Here’s what you will need.
- 2 packets of Cherry Kool-Aid (or whatever flavor you decide on)
- 1 Gallon jar of Kosher Dill Pickles
- 2 1/3 cups of sugar
- large pot or bowl
- mixing spoon
- measuring cup
- kitchen knife
That’s it! That’s all you need to make your own “Koolickles” at home. The process from start to finish is also very quick and easy. It took me about 5 minutes to complete and I have listed the steps below for anyone of any skills level to follow.
Step 1: Drain the pickle juice into a large pot.
Step 2: Cut the Pickles into halves or quarters (depending on how big they are, I chose quarters for this brand.
Step 3: Put the pickles back in the jar.
Step 4: Add Kool-Aid packets to the pickle juice in the pot.
Step 5: Add the sugar.
Step 6: Stir it up until the sugar is fully dissolved.
Step 7: Add the stirred concoction back into the pickle jar.
Step 8: Put it in the fridge and wait about a week for the best experience (you can have them sooner if you just can’t wait that long lol)
There you have it, your very own Koolickles! Try it out and let me know what you think and what flavors you used! So far I have only tried cherry and orange, but I think grape will be next up once I finish all of these pickles haha.
